 Talk Title:
Cultural Voices: Resistance and Identity of Migrants in Cultural Collectives in São Paulo

 Abstract:
The study of international migration often overlooks the ways in which displaced persons resist the various forms of violence they face, from their countries of origin to their lives in host countries. While much of the literature focuses on issues such as integration and access to services, there is a gap in understanding the collective actions migrants use to confront xenophobia and institutional racism. This research, based on Varela Huerta's (2015) sociology of migrant struggles, focuses on the strategies of organization adopted by migrant communities in Brazil. It explores how these communities use cultural and artistic practices as tools for political resistance and the assertion of identity. Through an analysis of an artistic collective formed by migrants, this study argues that this group mobilizes some strategies to demand recognition and belonging. Specifically, it highlights the focus on indigenous identity among migrants from Bolivia. This research contributes to the understanding of contemporary migrant struggles in Brazil, showing how art serves as both a form of resistance and a catalyst for their indigenous status demand.
