‘Bodo’ was a passionate and  profound mycologist,  with a large knowledge of fungal systematics, taxonomy, evolutionary and developmental biology (incl. toxicological and ethnomycological tasks); symbiotic relationships of fungi (e.g., ectomycorrhizae).

He was  chief editor of SYDOWIA – An International Journal of Mycology from 2004-2014, Vice President of the European Mycological Association (2003-2007), co-founder and honorary member of the Centro Studi per la Flora Mediterranea, Borgo Val di Taro, Parma, Italy, and involved in numerous activities promoting mycology.
