Abstract
AI and the changing landscape of L2 writing in schools
The rapid development of generative artificial intelligence is reshaping how writing is approached, taught and assessed, with particular implications for second language (L2) learners. While AI tools offer new possibilities for linguistic support, idea generation and feedback, they also raise important pedagogical and ethical questions, particularly in school contexts where writing development remains closely linked to language learning.
This workshop draws on the outcomes of the Erasmus+ funded project, AI Write, which explored how AI can be integrated into writing pedagogy in ways that support, rather than replace, learning and the development of writing competence. Framed within current approaches to L2 writing and language pedagogy, the session adopts a process-oriented perspective, focusing on how AI can be used meaningfully at different stages of writing, including planning, drafting and editing. Particular attention is given to how genAI tools can support language development, learner autonomy and metalinguistic awareness, while avoiding over-reliance on automated output.
The workshop is interactive and practice-based, inviting participants to engage with a selection of Open Educational Resources (OERs) developed within the project. Participants will explore how these activities can be adapted for different classroom settings and learner needs. The materials are designed to support learners’ critical and reflective use of AI while maintaining attention to key aspects of language development, and to offer practical, transferable approaches that can inform teaching and teacher education in a range of educational contexts.
