Turning Points in Peace Processes. Mapping the Conditions of Change in Cycles of Violence
In contexts of protracted intrastate conflicts, in which people have often experienced loss, large-scale violence and trauma, it usually appears difficult to reconcile and end the different forms of violence that keep reoccurring on the episodes of conflicts. However, sometimes – perhaps after months, perhaps after generations – turning points are reached, which allow people to break out of cycles of violence and reestablish more harmonious human relationships beyond dualistic lines of divide. This research, which is both theoretical and empirical in nature, is primarily concerned with two dimensions of such turning points in peace processes: first with their structural circumstances that contain the conflicting parties in moments of turning points and second with their relational qualities which may point towards the underlying epicenter of conflict. Working with grounded theory and Elicitive Conflict Mapping, the aim of this study is to develop a theory of middle range about the conditions under which turning points are reached in successful peace processes, aiming at contributing to current debates on peace facilitation and conflict transformation work in the context of both inter- and intra-state conflicts. Empirical Case Studies entail the peace process between Ethiopia and Eritrea, as well as between the Colombian government and different guerilla groups.
