Promotionsprojekt
Mapping Feminist Uprisings: An Intersectional Conflict Analysis of the Tahrir and Gezi Park Movements
Im Rahmen des am Forschungsschwerpunkt „Kulturelle Begegnungen – Kulturelle Konflikte“ konzipierten transdisziplinären Projekts mit dem Titel: „Third Sides: Conflict Transformation and Gender in the Gezi Park and Tahrir Movements“ (gemeinsam mit Theresa Frank und Adham Hamed)
‘Third Sides’ is a transdisciplinary research project that examines forms of moral imagination within the Gezi Park and Tahrir Movements. The concept of the moral imagination as defined by John Paul Lederach consists of four crucial faculties: First, the capacity to imagine oneself in a web of relationships that includes one’s enemies. Second, the ability to embrace complexity without getting caught up in dualistic polarities. Third, a commitment to creativity. And fourth, an acceptance of the risk that necessarily goes along with attempts to transcend violence. The aim of this project is to understand the potential of moral imagination, as articulated by third sides, people from the community supporting a process of dialog and nonviolence to transform conflicts. This project is particularly interested in third sides from within both movements that articulate alternative courses of action regarding the transformation of gender-based violence and conflicts rooted in polarizing narratives about identity and belonging. On a theoretical level, the concept of moral imagination will be developed further by adding immoral imagination as a crucial new dimension. This approach will introduce potentials of dystopian interventions into conflict theory. The research combines a historical and an empirical component: In a first step, moral and immoral imagination will be analyzed in the works of first-, second- and third-wave feminists, taking some of the most representative actors in Egypt and Turkey as cases for a critical historical analysis. In a second step, two gender initiatives of the Gezi Park and Tahrir Movements will be analyzed empirically by applying semi-structured interviews and focus group discussions as methods of data collection that will be analyzed through a narratological approach.
