The Brenner-Archiv was founded in 1964 on the basis of a contract between the Austrian government and Ludwig von Ficker, the editor of the periodical "Der Brenner" (1910-1954). Numerous manuscripts and the extensive correspondence from the editorial office of the journal as well as letters from Ficker’s circle of friends were thereby made accessible for archival conservation and to scolarly use.

In 1979 the Brenner-Archives was established as a research institute on the basis of a contract between the Austrian federal government, the Tyrolean government and the Leopold-Franzens-University of Innsbruck. This achievement was principally the result of unceasing effort on the part of Ao. Univ.-Prof. Dr. Walter Methlagl, the founder and long-time director of the Archives.

Since autumn of 2001 Ao. Univ.-Prof. Mag. Dr. Johann Holzner has been its director.

The board of trustees consists of representatives from the Austrian Ministry of Science, from the University of Innsbruck and from the Tyrolean government as well as of relatives of Ludwig von Ficker.
