Biodiversity in the Alps and other mountain ranges
Mountain ranges are outstanding hotspots of biodiversity, defined as the variation of life at all levels of biological organization. We are exploring the biodiversity of vascular and non-vascular plants at different levels, ranging from genes over populations, species and communities to ecosystems. We apply molecular, classical morphometric, ultrastructural, demographic and ecological approaches.
In particular, we are interested in:
Evolution, systematics and biogeography of planktonic and benthic freshwater algae, aeroterrestrial algae and vascular plants with a focus on mountain areas | ![]() |
Population development and species replacement in glacier forelands and on rock glaciers More details »» |

Diversity along altitudinal gradients and in urban environments on the species level as well as on the community level |
