Shotcrete Technoloy ´06

Application of Shotcrete under Extraordinary Conditions
at the Russia Wharf Tunnel’ in Boston, USA

Dipl.-Ing. Norbert Fügenschuh, Beton- und Monierbau GesmbH

The construction works at the ‘Russia Wharf Project’ in Boston, USA have been performed between September 2002 and October 2003. The dry shotcrete method has been used not only for the shotcrete for the initial support, but also for installation of the steel fiber reinforced inner lining. The location of the construction site close to the Boston Downtown and the harbour area and the excavation of the tunnel in artificially frozen ground underneath historic buildings created special problems for the shotcreting process.
The paper describes the shotcrete pretesting program, the process of transferring the pretest results to the actual practical application and of course the methods how the problems of the construction site could be solved. Besides the tunnel excavation the special problems during installation of the SFRS-inner lining will be highlighted.
