23rd November 2020: The origin of stellar bars and their role in shaping disc galaxies

Speaker: Yetli Rosas-Guevara (Donostia International Physics Center, Spain). Location: Virtually; 3 pm

Stellar bars are non-axisymmetrical structures found in more than one-third of massive disc galaxies observed today. It is believed that they could play a role in the evolution of disc galaxies and to be responsible for the dynamical redistribution of the gas in the disc. Another important aspect of stellar bars is their formation. The favourable conditions for a galaxy to (or not) form a bar is not fully understood. In this talk, I will discuss the possible conditions to form a bar and its effects in the central part of the galaxy using the analysis of barred and unbarred galaxies in the TNG100 and TNG50 simulations.
