Spain, Zaragoza, double whorl spindles
Spanish double-whorl-spindles with iron hook at the tip from the province of Zaragoza. This type of spindle is mainly used for plying. Lengths with hook: 12.6" and 12.8". Whorl diameters: 1.53" (upper whorl of left spindle), 1.33" (lower whorl of left spindle), 1.85" (upper and lower whorl of right spindle).

Spain, Zaragoza, spindles
Wooden Spanish spindles with spiral tip from the province of Zaragoza. The upper part of the spindle to the left is broken and it a new notch was carved into the broken end. Preserved length of the broken spindle: 9"; Length of the fully intact spindle: 13.38".

Spain, Zaragoza, miniature spindle
Very small spindle from the province of Zaragoza. Secondary cut marks on the otherwise turned spindle show that it was once much larger. Probably it was originally even a double-whorl-spindle that broke irreparably, and the present fragment was perhaps used as a toy. Preserved length: 5.3".

Wooden Spanish spindles with spiral tip from Galicia, Northwest Spain. Lengths: 8.85", 12.36" and 13.97".

 

Spain, distaff, spindle
Pastoral distaff and spindle. The distaff was carved from a slightly curved branch and, like the spindle, painted red-green-blue. The spindle was originally used as a bobbin/spindle in a textile mill and is here in secondary use. The distaff and spindle is an ensemble as the painting in identical colors show. Length of distaff: 32.6", length of spindle: 10,47". First half 20 century.

Pastoral distaff. Inside the larger of the two knob-like areas there is an object that produces a rattling noise when shaking the distaff. Length: 38".

Spain, Almudévar, spindles for spinning and plying
Women from Almudévar, Huesca province, demonstrate the processing, spinning, plying and knitting of wool.

Different spindles are used for spinning and plying. The distaff consists of a wooden or bamboo pole split at the top and the wool fibers are clamped into the gap.
A: spindle for spinning, B: distaff for spinning C: double-whorl spindle for plying.

Woman from Catalonia spins and plies yarn with two different spindles. A: spindle for spinning, B: top-whorl spindle for plying. The distaff consists of a wooden or bamboo pole split at the top and the wool fibers are clamped into the gap. Before plying yarn from two spindles is wound together to a ball. During plying the spindle is rubbed down the thigh.
