Cotton mill spindle
Bobbin/spindle used to spin cotton yarn at a textile mill. Detail from a patent drawing. Patent #: US003199283. US Patent with drawings and full specifications that explain how these bobbins are/were used. (21.07.2016).

Different spindles are used for spinning and plying. The distaff consists of a wooden or bamboo pole split at the top and the wool fibers are clamped into the gap.
A: spindle for spinning, B: distaff for spinning C: double-whorl spindle for plying.

Woman from Catalonia spins and plies yarn with two different spindles. A: spindle for spinning, B: top-whorl spindle for plying. The distaff consists of a wooden or bamboo pole split at the top and the wool fibers are clamped into the gap. Before plying yarn from two spindles is wound together to a ball. During plying the spindle is rubbed down the thigh.
