Theater Workshop

Since the winter term of 2014/15, we offer an annual theater workshop led by Michaela Adrigan. While the exact approach will differ, depending on the project, the students always work with selected American plays – for instance A Streetcar Named Desire or Who‘s Afraid of Virginia Woolf – or specific literary periods and foci, such as the American expatriate-literature of the 1920s (the so-called “lost generation”).

Students work with text passages, creating individual scenes with the help and guidance of the course instructor. This also includes working with additional prose literature, poetry, the fine arts, or music pieces. They present their work in regular intervals, develop ideas further, and merge them into a finished play at the end. Throughout the whole process, the focus lies on the connection to the US, while also allowing the individual students’ interests and skills to influence the final outcome. Furthermore, students do a number of exercises that strengthen the perception of their own bodies and their spatial awareness, as well as improving the group dynamics and furthering team spirit.
