Student Exchange Program between the Department of American Studies and Utah State University in Logan, Utah, USA

Since 2000, the student exchange program between the Innsbruck Department of American Studies and Utah State University (USU) gives students the opportunity to spend a semester at a university in the American West.

For the current deadline, please contact Sandra Tausel, BA MA via

Students who apply for the USU exchange program should have a special interest in American Literature and Culture. By the time of application, they should have completed their first “Studienabschnitt” or be well advanced in their BA studies. For their formal application, students must provide the following documents (in English):

  1. A cover page containing name, home and mailing addresses, phone number, and e-mail address.
  2. A letter of intent (1 page) which states your motivation and qualifications for studying at USU, the kind of courses you plan to take and how they would fit in with your personal areas of interest and study focus, as well as expectations or how and why you think you will profit from the study abroad experience.
  3. A CV (in tabular form).
  4. Copies of your record of exams: (first „Diplomprüfungszeugnis“ and full academic record).

After submitting all of these documents, you will be invited for an interview with the head of the exchange program, Univ.-Prof. Dr. Gudrun Grabher. There, you will also be given further information about the program and the next steps.

Some of the expenses (e.g. board and study supplies or books) are hard to estimate as they depend on you and your course selection. However, compared to travel costs and accommodation, those are fairly small expenses.

You are responsible for all of your personal expenses including housing (about $ 850-1400 per semester, depending on whether you want to share a room or not), but USU does try to assist you with finding something appropriate. You can find out more about your options at

During your stay abroad, you will have to pay the ÖH-fee at the University of Innsbruck, which is under € 20. You also have to pay an application fee for the student exchange program, a fee for your J-1 visa application, and the SEVIS fee of € 85. You do not have to pay any tuition fees in Utah.

Also, if you are selected for our exchange program, you can apply for a joint-study-stipend at the international relations office at the University of Innsbruck (about € 300-400). Find out more at

Recommended courses and ECTS

Exchange students can take 12–18 credits if designated as “undergraduate”s and 9 credits if they attend as “graduate students”. Most classes are 3 credits each. USU recommends that exchange students take 4 classes. It is likely that the curriculum for your semester of choice has not yet been published, but you can get an idea about some of the courses USU tends to offer here:

Further steps

If you have submitted your application, had your personal interview, and were selected, we will forward your paperwork to Utah State University for further processing, as well as to the international relations office (where you can apply for a joint-study-program, see link below).

You fill in all the official application documents, as well as adding a confirmation of your bank for your visa-application, confirming that you or your parents have about $ 7.000 per semester at your disposal. The USU will send you a welcome package and a form to apply for the J1 visa. Getting the visa is your responsibility, which means you need to call the US embassy in Vienna or the consulate in Munich. You are also responsible for getting health insurance for your stay abroad.
