Guidelines MA English and American Studies

The Master's program in English and American Studies gives students a lot of flexibility in designing a personal study plan as the curriculum offers a range of innovative choices. Generally, this Master's degree program (4 semesters, 120 ECTS-Credits) consists of three parts:

MA Program_3 Parts

1. Compulsory and Elective Courses in English and American Studies

The main part (60 ECTS-Credits) consists of compulsory and elective modules in English and American Studies. Due to the small number of compulsory modules and the high number of elective modules, students can choose between a targeted specialization and a rather broad orientation in the three areas of competence Linguistics and Culture, English Literature and Culture, and American Literature and Culture.

Compulsory Modules (10 ECTS-Credits):

Compulsory Modules must be completed but not in the first semester.

CM 1: Compulsory Module: Academic Research and Methodology (5 ECTS-Credits) consist of two courses:

  • UE Language and Text Production (2,5 ECTS-Credits)

CM 2: Compulsory Module: Research Colloquium for Master’s Thesis (5 ECTS-Credits) consists of only one course:

2. MA Thesis

The degree is completed with the preparation of the master’s thesis (5 ECTS-Credits), writing the master’s thesis itself (22.5 ECTS-Credits), and the defense of the master’s thesis (2.5 ECTS-Credits).

3. Electives

Electives (30 ECTS-Credits) can be completed in two ways, either with one of the so-called Minors (with the exception of the Minor English and American Studies if you are enrolled in this Master's program) or with freely selectable MA-level courses.

  • Option 1: Minor (Complementary Subject Areas)

Minors are modules amounting to 30 ECTS-Credits from other fields of study. If completed, they are explicitly indicated in the final diploma. Students are given the opportunity to establish connections between their own and other disciplines, so that in addition to the required specialization, they also develop a breadth of knowledge and skills while further developing and critically reflecting on interdisciplinary and transdisciplinary competences. Many of these courses, however, will not be taught in English. For a list of Minors, please go to:

https://www.uibk.ac.at/studium/angebot/wahlpakete/index.html.en#MA

The minor Film Studies is also available. For detailed information refer to: https://www.uibk.ac.at/projects/filmwissenschaft/

Registration for Minors is not required; you can decide yourself in which semester you start.

  • Option 2: Free Choice

You can freely choose courses from the Master's programs at the University of Innsbruck as part of the interdisciplinary skills (amounting to 10 ECTS-Credits) and modules as part of the individual choice of specialization (amounting to 20 ECTS-Credits). This also gives you the opportunity to specialize further in English and American Studies.
