After a discussion of relevant historical aspects that include Bramante's Tempietto and the dome of St. Peter's in Rome, the current dome of the U.S. Capitol Building in Washington, D.C., constructed from 1856 to 1863, is described both from the point of view of its aesthetics and its structural design.
