"If there is anyone out there who still doubts that America is a place where all things are possible, who still wonders if the dream of our founders is alive in our time, who still questions the power of our democracy, tonight is your answer." Those were the words the new President-elect used to describe the unprecedented choice of a country still trying to come to terms with its history of segregation.

No voting-machine fiasco, no recounts; the ghosts of elections past and “Bradley effects” dispersed as soon as the unambiguous results were in: Barack Obama, who defeated John McCain by claiming the fiercely contested battleground states, will be inaugurated on January 20, 2009 as the 44th President of the United States and the first of African American origin.

This historic vote for change encouraged more than eighty Americans and non-Americans to attend the ACI’s post-election breakfast hosted in cooperation with the Austro-American Society/Tirol Chapter. The ORF, the Tiroler Tageszeitung, Antenne Tirol, and Ö3 were also on the spot, capturing the relaxed atmosphere and the discussions sparked by the latest news broadcasts about the election results, Democratic and Republican responses, the national and international celebrations, but also the economic and military challenges that lie ahead. It remains to be seen if the American population still optimistically declares “Yes, we can!” in four years.
