Bob Tennyson (Austro-American Society), Mario Klarer (Department of American Studies), and Steve Labensky (U.S. Embassy Vienna)

A sea of star spangled banners heaving and rolling with enthusiastic applause, innumerable close-ups of faces gleaming with hope and the appreciation of witnessing history in the making - This was the impressive image of two million people gathered at the Washington Capitol for the inauguration of the 44th president of the United States, Barack Hussein Obama. Although the crowd that attended the ACI’s inauguration event, which was hosted in cooperation with the Austro-American Society and the University of New Orleans Center Austria, was considerably smaller, its members nevertheless shared the same air of enthusiasm surrounding this historical event.

More than eighty students, members of the Austro-American Society, the Department of American Studies, and Steven Labensky, Public Diplomacy Officer of the U.S. Embassy Vienna, enjoyed themselves over delicious snacks and wine. However, they all fell instantly silent as the new President stepped up to the podium to deliver his eagerly awaited inaugural address which contained both the awareness of past blunders and determination aspiring to inspire further trust and optimism in the promise of America which this unprecedented election already testifies to.
