Research Centre
Ecology of the Alpine Region

The research centre 'Ecology of the Alpine Region' focuses on the impact of global forces on the functionality, stability, and vulnerability of mountain ecosystems and mountainous areas, including terrestrial and aquatic ecosystems. Special attention is given to ecosystem services like the preservation of biodiversity and the minimization of risk potentials. This includes the deployment of new and newly developed analysis and modelling techniques for spatial and temporal scenarios of Alpine regions at different scales.

The research centre is interdisciplinary. The interaction of man and nature in mountainous regions and the analysis thereof lead to a scientific foundation for the sustainable development of these regions.

Scientists from all biological disciplines collaborate at the very heart of this research centre. Well established cooperations with other disciplines (Geo- and Atmospheric Sciences, Economics and Statistics) and experts from outside the university expand the research centre’s expertise beyond the limits of Innsbruck University.
