Current Research:

Stem cells and germ cells are able to produce every cell type of a specific organism by differentiation processes. I am interested in the genes that drive stem cell differentiation and self renewal as well as germ cell development. What is these genes’ duty in animal lineages that arose early during evolution? Are there differences to species that evolved later? To tackle those questions I am studying organisms of different clades and evolutionary levels like Macrostomum lignano (Platyhelminthes), Isodiametra pulchra (Acoela), Hydra vugaris (Cnidaria) and the fruitfly Drosophila melanogaster. A main project is to decipher the evolution, function and significance of the highly conserved meiotic regulator boule in the animal kingdom. For most male organisms defects in this particular gene mean to lose fertility.
