Genotyping of native trout: TroutExamInvest
http://c719-71-22.uibk.ac.at/TroutExamInvest/
Although brown trout (Salmo trutta fario) is not an endangered species, their local strains are endangered and some lines are close to extinction. Heavy fishing and bad fisheries management led to diminishing stocks, natural reproduction failed to replenish the populations. Only stocking prevented the disappearence of trout from several locations. However, these stocking activities introduced foreign material. Within the project, Trout Exam-Invest, native (autochthonous) brown trout (in South Tyrol also the marble trout, Salmo trutta marmorata)are sought, reproduced and reintroduced.
This project is a collaboration between the Departement of Zoology at Innsbruck University, the Agricultural Research Center Laimburg, and the Alpenzoo in Innsbruck. Since 2003 the Nationalpark Hohe Tauern joined this project which is supported by the EC, local goverments and private sponsors.
