Only ÖH-fee at the start
Degree students with a citizenship from EU/EEA/CH and students of equal status who enrol for a Bachelor’s, Diploma, Master’s or Doctoral programme, only have to pay the ÖH-fee at the start of their new study programme. For registration of the continuation of studies, students who are within the designated study duration (+ tolerance) must also pay only the ÖH-fee for each semester in time.
ÖH-Fee in the academic year 2022/2023: € 21.20
ÖH-Fee in the academic year 2023/2024: € 22.70
Who has to pay tuition fee?
Tuition fee must be paid if
- the non-contributory time (designated duration of a Bachelor’s, Master’s or Doctoral programme or one part of the studies of a Diploma programme + two tolerance semesters) has been exceeded
- if students have an obligation to pay the fee because of their citizenship
- if students pursue non-degree programmes (e.g. individual courses, university entrance qualification examination)
The tuition fee amounts to € 363.36 per semester (AUT, EU/EEA, CH) and for citizens of third countries € 726.72 per semester. In addition to the tuition fee, the ÖH-fee must be always paid (see above).
Student who have equal status to citizens of EU/EEA/CH citizens:
- students with a permanent residence permit (proof required - online application)
- students from third country, who have an Austrian affiliation according to the Austrian Regulation on Eligible Groups of Persons (proof required - online application
Degree students from third countries:

Degree students from third countries who are not covered by the Austrian Regulation on Eligible Groups of Persons and to whom no international treaty applies and who have a residence permit acc. to §64 of the Settlement and Residence Act (NAG) have to pay a tuition fee of € 726.72 (plus ÖH-fee) from the first semester.
Degree students from developing countries (LCD):
Degree students from developing countries are automatically exempted from paying tuition fees by the system. They do not have to apply for exemption. Please note, however, that a change of citizenship must be reported immediately.
Afghanistan, Angola, Bangladesh, Benin, Bhutan, Burkina Faso, Burundi, Cambodia, Central African Republic, Chad, Comoros, Democratic Republic of the Congo, Djibouti, Eritrea, Ethiopia, Gambia, Guinea, Guinea-Bissau, Haiti, Kiribati, Lao People’s Democratic Republic, Lesotho, Liberia, Madagascar, Malawi, Mali, Mauritania, Mozambique, Myanmar, Nepal, Niger, Rwanda, Sao Tome and Principe, Senegal, Sierra Leone, Solomon Islands, Somalia, South Sudan, Sudan, Timor-Leste, Togo, Tuvalu, Uganda, United Republic of Tanzania, Vanuatu, Yemen, Zambia
Students, who are enrolled in a joint study programme of the University of Innsbruck and the UMIT Private University:
Students, who are enrolled in a joint study programme of the University of Innsbruck and the UMIT Private University in Hall, are subject to tuition fees at the UMIT. More information can be found on the respective study programme’s profile page or at the website of the UMIT reps.
Exemption from tuition fee due to equality of EU/EEA citizens
EU/EAA-citizens are exempt from paying tuition fee during the minimum study time + two tolerance semesters. Non-EU/EEA-citizens who want to get equal status must present proof of this equality with EU/EEA-citizens.
The following students can present this proof:
- Students, who are granted the same access rights to the labour market as Austrians, based on a contract of public international law (e.g. convention refugees)
- Students with an “EC permanent residence” permit
- Non-EU/EEA citizens with other residence permits (Attention: No equality and exemption of tuition fees is possible for holders of a student residence permit.)
- Students who fall under the Austrian Regulation on Eligible Groups of Persons (Attention: No equality and exemption of tuition fees for students who are self-insured in Austria)
Waiver and reimbursement of the tuition fee
For a waiver or reimbursement of the tuition fee certain deadlines must be met in addition to the presentation of proof for legal reasons for a waiver (e.g. major responsibility for taking care of an own child):
Application for waiver (LFU:online):
- by 31 October at the latest for the winter semester and
- by 31 March at the latest for the summer semester
Application for reimbursement (LFU:online):
- by 31 March at the latest for the winter semester and
- by 30 September at the latest for the summer semester
Please note: As of the winter semester of 2018/2019, there are new regulations for the reimbursement of the tuition fee for students in gainful employment:

Reimbursement of the ÖH-fee
The ÖH-fee does not remain at the university, but is forwarded to the Austrian Students’ Union (ÖH).
The ÖH-fee can be reimbursed upon application
- if the study programme is finished or stopped and there is no admission to an Austrian University or
- if the ÖH-fee has been paid at the University of Innsbruck and at another Austrian university/university of applied sciences for the same semester.
The application must be filed at the ÖH.
If the ÖH-fee was accidentally paid twice, it will only be forwarded once to the ÖH. In this case, the application for reimbursement must be filed not at the ÖH, but at the university – see “Reimbursement of tuition fee”.
