Proof of general university entrance qualification:

With the exception of § 64 par. 5 UG 2002, the general university entrance qualification for admission to a doctoral programme shall be demonstrated by the completion of a relevant diploma programme or master's programme or another relevant programme of at least the same level of higher education at a recognised domestic or foreign post-secondary educational institution. To compensate for substantial subject-related differences, supplementary examinations may be prescribed, which must be taken by the end of the second semester of the doctoral degree programme.

The rectorate may determine which of these supplementary examinations are prerequisites for taking examinations provided for in the curriculum of the doctoral degree programme.

Modules and Dissertation

1. Scientific Basics/Core Skills of the Thesis Topic 10 ECTS-Credits 2. Interdisciplinary Seminar for PhD Candidates  5 ECTS-Credits 3. Doctoral Thesis Defence 5 ECTS-Credits	The dissertation is a piece of scientific work which – unlike a diploma or master‘s thesis – serves to prove the student's ability to address scientific questions in an independent manner. The dissertation topic must be chosen from the fields of linguistics and media studies. The student proposes a team of supervisors, consisting of at least two people (dissertation committee), and nominates one of them as the main supervisor. Students are permitted to propose supervisors (with the exception of the main supervisor) from subject-related fields. Furthermore, in justifiable exceptional cases it is possible for students to propose only one supervisor. Prior to beginning work on the dissertation, the student must communicate in writing the dissertation topic and names of the supervisors to the Director of Studies. Topic and supervisors are considered as accepted if the Director of Studies does not veto them by means of a decree within one month of receiving the proposal.
Elective Modules  10 ECTS-Credits
Students must complete elective modules equal to 10 ECTS-Credits; at least one of elective modules 1 to 5 must be chosen.

Qualification Profile and Skills

Graduates of the Doctoral Programme Linguistics and Media Studies have a systematic understanding of their research discipline and grasp of the methods employed by research in this field. Through their submission of an original piece of scientific work, graduates of this programme have made a contribution to research which widens boundaries of knowledge and conforms to the evaluation standards of national and international experts. They identify scientific questions and independently subject them to critical analysis. Graduates develop and synthesize new complex ideas, technologies, and methods in an independent manner. They are capable of independently designing and carrying out significant research projects with scientific integrity and are qualified to reflect on these processes in terms of the theory of science. They are qualified junior scientists. In an academic or non-academic environment, graduates are able to advance the social, scientific and/or cultural progress of a knowledge-based society. Graduates of the Doctoral programme Linguistics and Media Studies are qualified to organize scientific forums, to discuss findings from their area of expertise with colleagues, students and experts, and to present and explain these findings to both students as well as to academic and interested non-academic audiences. They are able to look beyond the boundaries of their own disciplines and to integrate themselves into inter-disciplinary scientific discourse in a constructive way.

Expected Learning Outcomes for the Doctorate

Graduates are qualified junior academics. They have mastered the methods applied in research in their area and are capable of critically discussing, analyzing, and further developing theories. Junior academics possess the competence to develop and conduct substantial research projects with scientific integrity, and they are qualified to reflect on these processes scientifically and theoretically. They are also aware of issues and questions in gender research.

Future Prospects: Occupational Profiles and Career Opportunities

Career opportunities are in university and non-academic research institutions as well as in journalism, publishing, radio and TV, theater, film, new media, language consulting, technical editing, and in the area of translation.
