Studies Induction and Orientation Stage (STEOP)
Studies Induction and Orientation Stage (STEOP) starting winter term 2016 »
(1) Within the scope of the Studies and Orientation Stage, which takes place in the first semester, the following course examinations must be passed:
- VO Fundamentals of Linguistics (CM 2/2 h/5 ECTS-Credits),
- VO The World’s Languages CM 7/2 h/5 ECTS-Credits).
(2) Successful passing of all exams of the Studies Induction and Orientation Stage entitles to passing all further courses and examinations and to writing the Bachelor’s Thesis.
(3) Before successful completion of the Studies Induction and Orientation Stage courses amounting to 20 ECTS-Credits may be passed. The registration requirements listed in the curriculum must be met.
Studies Induction and Orientation Stage (STEOP) until december 2015 »
(1) The Studies Induction and Orientation Stage (STEOP), with a duration of one semester (30 ECTS-Credits), provides an overview of the study programme and its structure in order to give students an objective basis to assess their decision to pursue their chosen subjects.
(2) During the Studies Induction and Orientation Stage, the following course examinations, which may be repeated twice, must be completed satisfactorily:
- VO Introduction to Linguistics (PM 2/2 hours/5 ECTS-Credits)
- VO Introduction to Linguistics (PM 6a/2 hours/2.5 ECTS-Credits)
(3) A positive result (passing grade) on the examinations specified in Paragraph 2 permits students to attend all courses and take all examinations following the Introduction and Orientation Phase for Students (STEOP) and to write a bachelor's thesis as described in the curriculum. The registration requirements specified by the curriculum must be met.
Recommended Course Sequence
The exemplary course sequence given below is recommended for full-time students beginning their study programme in the winter semester. The table shows one possible course sequence for the bachelor's programme and is not compulsory. Delays resulting from repeated examinations are not taken into account.
The standard duration of the study programme is 6 semesters or 180 ECTS-Credits, whereby according to the Universities Act of 2002, a workload of 1,500 (real) hours per academic year must be fulfilled, corresponding to 60 ECTS-Credits (one ECTS-Credit is equivalent to a workload of 25 hours).

Qualification Profile and Skills
Graduates of the Bachelor's Programme Linguistics are able to carry out linguistic analyses in different fields of application and to apply the acquired analytical competences in other disciplines and fields of activity.
Subject-specific theoretical skills
Theoretically sound analyses of linguistic facts and assessment of theoretical models both from a synchronic and a diachronic perspective; general overview of languages and their genetic, typological and areal classification.
Practical language skills
To be acquired in practice-oriented modules, e.g. patholinguistics and logopedics, writing for public relations and companies, rhetoric, sociolinguistics. Development of a general language learning competence, whereas the acquistion of typologically different languages is recommended.
Media skills
Familiarity in dealing with different text types and media, combined with the acquisition of a general presentation competence. Competence in cultural science with special attention to the languages and cultures of the Alpine region is to be conveyed.
Intercultural skills
Cultural interaction processes are to be analysed and developed. Moreover, the development of interdisciplinary key competences is to be emphasized, such as independence and orientation competence by autonomous knowledge acquistion and further education, verbal and written expression, foreign language competence as well as teamwork and gender competence.
Expected Learning Outcomes
Graduates are able to implement profound language analysis in different application areas and to apply analytical comptences in interdisciplinary contexts. They possess scientifically well-founded theoretical and methodical problem-solving skills, orientation competence with individual and critical knowledge acquistion, verbal and written expression, teamwork and gender competence.
Future Prospects: Occupational Profiles and Career Opportunities
Graduates of the Bachelor's Programme Linguistics have acquired the scientific basis for a relevant maste's programme. The programme prepares for the following activities: publishing, librarianship and documentation, media and communication, advertising agencies, language consulting, health care (language assistance, language therapy), sign language institutions, technical documentation.
