PCLOSTrans

GNU/Linux Desktop for Translators

PCLOSTrans is a Desktop GNU/Linux System developed for translators on the basis of the distribution PCLinuxOS. It is not only a full fledged operating system, it also includes a broad collection of software applications which allow a translator to do his/her job most efficiently and in line with the latest standards.

PCLOSTrans is based on free software and open source and in particular on PCLinuxOS. For an introduction into free software and why you should use GNU/Linux have a look at the these videos:

What's the Fuss about Linux

PCLOSTrans features a KDE desktop which makes it relatively easy to migrate from other operating systems. PCLOSTrans uses the KDE 3.5.10 desktop due to its stability and effectiveness; KDE4 will be implemented when PCLinuxOS with KDE4 will be ready.

PCLOSTrans comes with a lot of applications suited to the everyday tasks of the translator or everybody dealing with multilingual texts. The software ranges from an office suit and DTP software to highly specialized translation memory systems: see the complete list of applications and software packages installed

PCLOSTrans comes as a multilingual system (EN, DE, FR, ES, IT, RU) with English (en-us) as the default locale. To change the system and user interface language to one of the other five preinstalled languages (DE, FR, ES, IT, RU) or to any other locale please consult the languages page.

PCLOSTrans is a live DVD: This means that - once you have downloaded and burned it onto a blank DVD disk or copied to your USB stick (see get it - you may insert it into your DVD/USB drive, switch on your pc and start experimenting or even working without affecting your local hard disk and data: the PCLOSTrans live DVD/USB does not change anything on your harddisk. Bear in mind, though, that working from the DVD drive is much slower than a full local install.

Hardware requirements

A relatively modern PC with Intel architecture is enough to run it: Pentium 4 processor or compatible, 512 RAM and a 6 GB harddisk. These specifications are required mainly by the KDE desktop and OpenOffice. You will also need a bootable DVD or USB drive to start the system.

Questions?

For the underlying operating system, please consult the discussion forums at www.pclinuxos.com or www.mypclinuxos.com where you can find very good advice on handling the operating system.

Linguas OS

Alternatively you may choose Linguas OS a Linux desktop system by Anthony Baldwin which features the more lightweight desktop Fluxbox and is based on PCFluxBox also a clone of PCLinuxOS. Linguas OS fits on a single CD and is well suited for older hardware that does not support the KDE desktop of PCLOS-Trans.
PCLOS-Trans was created as a full blown desktop workstation for translators with as little annoyances as possible or just minimal need to change for people coming from Windows. Linguas OS follows another philosophy which is suited more for purists and for people knowing their way around Linux, its flexibility and different desktop philosophies.
