Research Focus

Topics of research studied at the Unit can be organized into the general theme of information management or, in a more recent term, information systems leadership. This research field investigates strategic activities in an organization which aim at the application of leading and innovative information and communication technologies in order to achieve competitive advantages. The information and communication landscape of an organisation is studied from an architectural perspective. This comprises the development and continuous improvement of enterprise-wide information and communication infrastructures, horizontal, vertical, business process-oriented and inter-organizational integration of information systems and the development of new business strategies based on innovative IT. Within this frame, the research activities of the Chair concentrate on business process and knowledge management. The transformation of organizations into knowledge-intensive and knowledge-aware organizations takes place at an ever-increasing pace. Knowledge as the key resource, not labour, raw material or capital, changes production functions in organizations significantly. Knowledge represents the key concept to explain the increasing velocity of the transformation of social life in general and the way businesses and social institutions work in particular. There is also a trend towards more complex problem-solving services where the majority of employees are well-educated and creative, self-motivated people. Employees' roles and their relationships to organizations are changed dramatically as knowledge workers replace industrial workers as the largest group of the work force. Consequently, businesses should no longer be seen from an industrial, but from a knowledge perspective. This scenario has been termed the information or knowledge economy.

Knowledge management (KM) promises concepts and instruments that help organizations to provide an environment for knowledge creation, transfer and application, to hone their managerial capabilities concerning knowledge and, more generally, to improve the way the organization handles knowledge. Therefore, KM has recently received a lot of attention and the interdisciplinary KM field attracts concepts and approaches from organization science, management science, strategy, human resource management, organization psychology and sociology. These concepts are used for modelling businesses and systems which support implementation and deployment of KM instruments.

Information and communication technologies as enablers

Information and communication technologies (ICT) are seen as enabler, as key instruments for the effective and most importantly for the efficient introduction of KM concepts. This requires the attention of the disciplines artificial intelligence, computer science and management information systems. Knowledge management systems build on heterogeneous ICT introduced recently in many organizations, such as Intranet infrastructures, document and content management systems, workflow systems, collaboration and Groupware systems, search engines, data warehouses, business intelligence systems as well as learning management systems. These are combined and enhanced by advanced services, personalization and access by a number of applications and (mobile) devices. Their deployment promises competitive advantages and improved capabilities and (core) competencies when combined with organizational instruments considering the organizational culture.
