| PREFACE |
Terminology and Knowledge Engineering are evolving fields of study, both with regard to their application-oriented aspects as well as with regard to the more theoretical and research-oriented approach. The 5th International Conference on Terminology and Knowledge Engineering '99, to be held in Innsbruck, is good evidence of this statement. The volume of the TKE'99 proceedings is a representative cross-section of research activities in the field of terminology studies with particular attention to the intersection of terminology and knowledge engineering.
Terminological knowledge engineering has evolved and progress has been made not only due to research into new methods of automatization for terminographical procedures taking into account recent developments in computer science - see section 2 and 5 of the present volume - but also due to the use of the new media and in particular the World Wide Web and its wealth of multimedia applications - see contributions in sections 4 and 6. New technical opportunities have enabled the development of user-friendly knowledge representation applications and at the same time strengthened the process of an exchange of knowledge units across languages and cultures - see sections 7 and 8 - in specialist communication - see section 3. Some basic theoretical considerations help put all this on a sound basis - see section 1.
All this underscores the role terminology plays in an increasingly knowledge- and information-dependent global and multilingual society. The TKE'99 Congress will offer, I hope, some interesting approaches and contributions to this research area.
Great effort has been made by the contributors to meet deadlines and formal requirements to enable the publication of this volume before the beginning of the Congress. I should like to thank the authors, the members of the Programming Committee, the organizers of sections, workshops and tutorials, the co-operating institutions, the supporting organizations and all people involved in the organization of the Congress.
