Our group is located at the Institute for Experimental Physics at the University of Innsbruck and at the Institute for Quantum Optics and Quantum Information (IQOQI) of the Austrian Academy of Sciences. In our laboratories temperatures are measured in micro- or nanokelvin (millionth or even billionth degree above absolute zero). In this ultracold world, produced by methods of laser cooling and trapping, atoms move at a snail's pace, are trapped by electromagnetic fields, and behave like matter waves. Interesting and fascinating new states of quantum matter are formed and investigated in our experiments.
