Cultural Studies:

Inter-/Transdisciplinarity and Institutionalization

Conference 6th – 8th March 2003

University of Innsbruck

Venue: Faculty of Theology, Karl-Rahner-Platz 3, Innsbruck

Cultural studies approaches in teaching and research have been attracting increasing attention for some time now. This 'cultural turn' has affected both the humanities and social sciences. In a context in which the social role of the human sciences is in any case being renegotiated, these disciplines are also confronted with demands for new methods of teaching and research that transcend conventional disciplinary boundaries. For these reasons, an increasing adoption and institutionalization of cultural studies can be observed within the Austrian intellectual scene. This development is partly a response to impulses coming from the Ministry of Education, Science and Culture’s “Cultural Studies” project that is now being wound down.

The conference “Cultural Studies: Inter-/Transdisciplinarity and Institutionalization” takes its cue from this starting point, and will examine a series of questions in the context of two organizationally separate, but substantially overlapping, parts. In a series of public lectures, academics from a number of countries will examine the effects of cultural studies as a paradigm on a variety of disciplines, and illuminate the ways in which these approaches have developed and been implemented within their respective research contexts. Closed workshops will serve as a platform for discussing the institutionalization of cultural studies in a specifically Austrian context with the aim of supporting the future development and networking of diverse projects.
