SYMPOSIUM
The Art of Cinema - Canada versus the United States
Canada and the US are marked by collaborative partnerships as well as competition in creating their own cinematic traditions.
On the one hand, they have a long history of cross-border collaborations (service productions, co-venture arrangements for the production of feature films). Yet with current opportunities for filmmakers across Canada and the U.S. new media production ecologies emerge that lay the foundation for innovative filmmaking practices (digital technologies) that will redefine the existing collaborations.
On the other hand, there is diversification in the sense that Canada has succeeded in developing her own cinematic traditions. Co-productions with international partners have contributed to the growth of Canadian cinema for many decades. In addition, government support allowed for the creation of a unique Canadian cinema (Egoyan, Arcand, Rozema, Mehta, Polley). In this oeuvre of Canada's independent films, a clear distinction from US cinema becomes visible with regard to style, themes and narratives.
