RINGVORLESUNG

The Canadian Film: History, Filmmakers, Perspectives.

The course has the objective to situate the Canadian cinema within a North American context reflecting on great filmmakers and their specific contributions to world cinema. The lecture series “The Canadian Film – History, Filmmakers, Perspectives” is part of the Canadian Film Focus 2011/2012, which started with a series of film screenings in cooperation with the LEOKINO in winter 2011/2012. It includes two lecture blocks, several film screenings and the international symposium entitled "The Art of Cinema - Canada versus the United States" which takes place on March 29 / 30.

"Investigating Creativity: from the Perspectives of Music and Business"

Guillaume Tardif (University of Alberta)

Guillaume Tardif (Doctor of Musical Art, Eastman School, University of Rochester) is Associate Professor and Area Coordinator for Chamber Music and Strings at the Department of Music, University of Alberta. He is an active concert violinist, performing in Canada and abroad as soloist and chamber musician. His research also takes the form of recording productions and violin compositions. His main areas of teaching are violin, chamber music, string literature and string pedagogy. He also teaches for the Kule Institute and the School of Business. In the summer of 2012, he will be a guest professor at the University of Innsbruck.

Dr. Guillaume Tardif is Associate Professor at the Department of Music, University of Alberta. He is an active concert violinist, performing in Canada and abroad as soloist and chamber musician. http://www.guillaume.tardif.com

Canadian pianist Roger Admiral performs solo and chamber music repertoire spanning the 18th through the 21st century. He is recognized for his dedication to contemporary music, and has commissioned and premiered many new compositions. Roger Admiral studied at the Royal Conservatory of Music (Toronto), University of Western Ontario, and the University of Alberta (Doctor of Music degree). His main teachers were Virginia Blaha, Peter Smith, Arthur Rowe, and Helmut Brauss. Recent performances include recitals with baritone Nathan Berg at Lincoln Center (New York City), contralto Marie-Nicole Lemieux at Symphony Under the Sky (Edmonton), violinist Ilya Kaler at Convocation Hall (Edmonton), violinist Guillaume Tardif at Carnegie Hall (New York City), and solo performances with New Music Concerts in Toronto (Ligeti Concerto, conducted by Robert Aitken) and Vancouver New Music Festival (Xenakis complete pinao works). He coaches contemporary chamber music at the University of Alberta.

Sandro Perri

Sandro Perri, vor allem bekannt als Kopf hinter POLMO POLPO und GLISSANDRO 70, veröffentlichte letztes Jahr sein neues Album „Impossible Spaces“ (Constallation). Inspiriert von Singer/Songwriter-Größen wie Tim Buckley, Tim Hardin oder Harry Nilsson zelebriert sich Sandro Perris neuestes Werk als wohl vielleicht melodischstes Postrock–Album 2011. Mit einer Mischung aus schönen LoFi-Klängen gepaart mit alternativen Folk, quietschenden Synthi-Flächen und schrägen Beats, lässt Perri seine Zuhörer regelrecht in „Impossible Spaces“ eintauchen und manchmal auch, mit einem Augenzwinkern verwirrt zurück.

The European Wars of Religion. An Interdisciplinary Reassessment of Sources, Myths, and Interpretations

While analyzing various kinds of early modern military conflicts in comparative perspective historians too have recently developed much more nuanced views of the religious wars and the emergence of the modern nation state. This final meeting of the research group „Religion – Politics – Violence“ is dedicated to a careful interdisciplinary reassessment of the meaning and character of the European wars of religion by focussing on the complex and changing relationship between religion, violence and state building.
