Monday, 24 January, 6.00 p.m. Saal University of New Orleans (Universitätshauptgebäude, 1. Stock)
As a final highlight of this semester’s activities, the American Corner Innsbruck (ACI) invited representatives from different exchange programs and organizations to talk about study-abroad programs and research possibilities in the U.S. We were delighted that more than 130 people from all faculties of the university followed the invitation of the ACI to hear about possibilities to study and to do research in the U.S.A.
After welcoming words and a brief introduction to the aims and activities of the ACI by Prof. Gudrun Grabher, Mag. Alexandra Enzi (Austrian-American Educational Commission) introduced the audience to the Fulbright Program, which provides grants for Austrian graduate students (or recent graduates) to study, conduct research, or work as German language assistants in the United States. Following this informative talk, Reg.-Rat ADir. Reinhard Aichner, representative of the International Relations Office, gave valuable information on current joint study programs and scholarships provided by the University of Innsbruck. Two important joint-study programs, the friendship agreement with the University of New Orleans, Louisiana, and the exchange program with Utah State University were presented by Christina Sturn, working for the International Relations Office, and Dr. Claudia Schwarz from the Department of American Studies. Dr. Schwarz also introduced the audience to the ÖAD that runs Austria’s most comprehensive database for scholarships. Christof Diem and Martina Netzer, staff members of the American Corner Innsbruck, then provided information on research funding by different faculties of the LFU, as well as on admission requirements, visa issues, and the U.S. embassy in Vienna. At the close of the lecture, Maria Vaclavicek, former exchange student at Utah State University, and Christof Diem, who pursued research in New York City, shared their first-hand knowledge of their study-abroad experience with the audience.
The huge audience and the lively discussion following the event underline that information about studying in the U.S.A. is in great demand and the ACI’s efforts in this respect are right on target.
