July 2, 2009, 6.00 p.m., American Corner Innsbruck, Herzog-Friedrich-Straße 3, 6020 Innsbruck
Thanks to generous financial support by the U.S. Embassy, the ACI was able to host a 4th-of-July party – already on the 2nd of July. As surprising as this choice of date may seem at first, it is nevertheless appropriate, since the resolution supporting the colonies’ independence was adopted by the U.S. Continental Congress on July 2. More than forty students, faculty members, and friends of the American Corner did not mind the negligible time difference and celebrated with us over finger food and roasted marshmallows.
Following introductory words by Prof. Dr. Gudrun Grabher, Christopher Quinlivan, Counselor for Commercial Affairs at the U.S. Embassy Vienna, delivered a speech which did not only commemorate the 233rd anniversary of the Declaration of Independence but also reminded us that democracy and justice are not exclusive values, but principles whose vitality is guaranteed by our shared responsibility to ensure a prosperous future. Cooperation clearly was the keyword of Mr. Quinlivan’s address – whether in the shape of interdisciplinary scientific research as practiced by the ACI or collaboration in an increasingly interconnected world as stressed in a message by Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, which Mr. Quinlivan read to the audience. Afterwards, our guests engaged in lively discussions with our slideshow of celebrated American icons and topography providing the perfect background. (text: Andreas Leisner)
